Interesting Applications at the Office 2.0 Conference

Steve Wylie

The Office 2.0 Conference is a fun event to attend with many interesting web-based apps to explore.  Ismael  Ghalimi is a very passionate conference host, who boasts 100% use of web/SaaS-based  applications to run the event. Ismael has also taken a firm stand on the use of paper and signage at his conference with nary a pulp-based product in sight.  I got quite a few demos while attending the conference today, but a few of them stood out for me.

Videoconferencing is experiencing a boom in 2008, and at Frost & Sullivan, we expect the trend to continue in 2009 and beyond. The Mobile Evolution

Paige Finkelman

The mobile workforce must feel frustrated. The market is chock full of cool 3G smart phones with slick interfaces and modern look and feel. Excitedly purchased with thoughts of using the device for work and play, it has to be disappointing to later be told by the grim faced IT department that they don’t approve the device you’ve purchased. Bummer.

Cisco Ups The Ante

Irwin Lazar

Cisco has announced this morning that it is buying PostPath, a maker of a Linux-based messaging & calendaring solution that competes directly with Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino. Cisco notes that they will use this acquisition to build advanced capabilities into WebEx Connect’s SaaS-based services rather than offer PostPath as an on-premises solution.

Beware of the Overload

Paige Finkelman

Finding the right tools to manage your workload is crucial. But tread lightly - as information overload isn’t a better problem per se - it’s just a different problem. Having one’s work flow interrupted with updates and reminders doesn’t lead to increased productivity. On the contrary, it hinders focusing attention on tasks and moving them along to completion.

Staying afloat in the depths of one’s email is a daily struggle for most of us. It’s difficult to carve out time to devote to other time consuming projects. Luckily there are collaborative tools that can help ease the strain. But just as important as the existence of the tools is the best practices associated with them. Here are a few I came up with:

Office 2.0 Conference Next Week

Steve Wylie

The Office 2.0 Conference is coming up next week, taking place from September 3-5 at San Francisco’s St Regis Hotel.  Ismael Ghalimi coined the phrase “Office 2.0″ a few years back and is the producer of the conference.  I went last year and heard some great speakers.  So I am eager to attend this year’s event and have already perused the agenda to map out some of the most interesting sessions.

American Airlines Aircell Reaction

Irwin Lazar

Last week American Airlines began the first flights of Aircell equipped planes, offering wireless Internet connectivity at a fairly low cost. The introduction of Aircell raises many of the same issues that we saw with Boeing’s ill-fated Connexion service a few years ago, namely the potential to get stuck next to a person who spends the whole flight talking using VOIP over wireless. But there are other issues as well….

Feeding the Beast

Melanie Turek

Steve’s comments below got me thinking about why we don’t just accept information overload, but actually ask for it.

There was plenty of chatter in the blogs this weekend over the decision by the Obama campaign to text its supporters news of the VP pick as soon as it happened (well, as soon as the campaign was ready to release it). Most of it seemed centered around (1) the timing of the text’s release (another 3am brouhaha), (2) the “next-gen Internet outreach” approach, and (3) the pick himself. Mainly lost in the discussion was whether anyone really needed to know the information in real time, on their cells and PDAs.
